Douglas C. Tomanelli, D.C. is a native of Long Island, NY. While attending junior high and high school he was a competitive Gymnast and he competed against many other schools in the Suffolk County area of Long Island.
After High school he worked as a sheet metal mechanic for 9 years, while also studying/competing in Martial Arts. He decided to go back to school and knew he wanted to do something in the science field. At that point, a good part of his life was in sports and he had seen many sprain/strain injuries and had a lot of those injuries himself. This made him want to learn about how to help others who have become injured as well. Physical Therapy was just surfacing as a profession at that time so he thought he would be a physical therapist.
There were only two schools on Long Island at the time, offering PT and they only took 20 people per semester. After a few times of being turned down Dr. Tomanelli met a chiropractor at his martial arts school. The chiropractor allowed him to shadow in his office where he saw some amazing things this doctor of chiropractic was doing with his hands and some therapy machines. At the end of the day, the Doctor of chiropractic asked Douglas why he wanted to go for physical therapy? The doctor then said, “why don’t you go to school for a few more years and become a doctor and do physical therapy in your own office?” That is when Dr. Tomanelli decided that is what he will do and 8 years later he was practicing.
Dr. Tomanelli studied Biology at Suffolk College on Long Island, New York, then furthered his studies at Life University in Marietta, Georgia where he obtained his Doctorate of Chiropractic. He owned and operated The Hixson Spine Center of Chattanooga for 20 years when he decided to join hands with Atlas Total Heath. For the last 26 years he has taken postgraduate classes on various studies such as, whiplash injuries, soft tissue injury rehabilitation, nutrition, and other types of treatments. His mechanical skills along with his science background helps him to solve some of the most difficult pain syndrome problems and will stop at nothing to figure it out so his patients are well taken care of.
A cheerful heart is good medicine.
